In March 1969, PLAYBOY published a reader’s Letter to the Editor that detailed the dangers of conversion therapy—a discredited practice that aims to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. The headline: “Gay is Good,” a reference to the 1960s rallying cry for LGBTQ equality.
Today, we’re calling on all to be inspired by the “Gay Is Good” rallying cry and celebrate free expression. Because Pride is good. To that end, we’ve created the PRIDE IS GOOD collection—our “call to ears” to wear your pride featuring original work by seven queer artists, such as Winston Elliott.
Inspired by the question “What does Pride mean to you,” Elliott says of his design, “I wanted to capture a bit of that joy in this collage—taking objects and ideas that may not be interesting on their own but find a sort of unified magic when combined. It’s easy and important to discuss the ongoing struggles and disparities our community faces, but I believe Pride allows us to celebrate and revel in its diverse beauty.”
Net proceeds from select items within the PRIDE IS GOOD collection will benefit The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States initiative to end conversion therapy and its ideology of shame in the U.S. and around the world.
So celebrate free expression. Stand with the queer community. And wear your pride loudly.
